Why Contact Lens Exams Are Necessary

Contact lenses are medical devices. They are worn directly on the cornea, which means they require a different prescription measurement than glasses. As well, because contact lenses are worn directly on the eye, a precise fit is necessary to keep your eyes comfortable and healthy.

Contact lens exams are necessary because they provide us with key information, such as your unique eye measurements and prescription, as well as any concerns you may have about previous contact lenses or your vision. This allows us to match you with an appropriate style of lens to maintain clear vision, eye comfort, and prevent any damage from a poorly fitting lens.

What to Expect During Your Contact Lens Fitting

During your contact lens exam, we will take several measurements. We use the Oculus Keratograph to measure your corneal curvature for a precise fit. We will also measure the size of your pupils and irises.

We’ll also discuss your lifestyle, contact lens preferences, and any difficulties you may have had with contacts in the past, such as dry eye symptoms. This helps us determine which style of contact lenses is right for you.

We provide up to 90 days of follow-up care as part of the fitting process to make sure the fit of your new lenses and the visual acuity they provide meets your satisfaction. Of course, we’re happy to meet with you at any point if you notice any discomfort.

Our Specialty Contact Lenses

Beyond standard soft contact lenses, we also fit a variety of specialty lenses. The type of contact lenses that work for you may change over time, depending on your prescription, lifestyle, and preferences. Our contact lens exams include understanding your eyewear needs so we can match you with the right style of contacts.

We invite you to ask questions and let us know if you have any concerns about your current contact lenses or about trying them for the first time. We’re happy to walk you through your options and find the right solution.

RGP contact lenses differ from soft contact lenses in their material. RGP lenses are made of durable plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to your eye during wear. They provide crisp vision and can be better for individuals with dry eye symptoms. Additionally, RGP lenses have a long lifespan and can help you save money with daily wear, compared to daily disposable lenses.

Hybrid contact lenses combine traits from both soft and RGP lenses to provide crisp and comfortable vision. The lens includes a gas-permeable center for clear vision and a soft silicone-hydrogel skirt that sits comfortably on the eye.

Hybrid lenses can be particularly beneficial for individuals with astigmatism, keratoconus, and other corneal irregularities, though many people without these conditions also favor hybrid lenses.

Aspheric contact lenses have a special design with a varying curvature to correct aberrations in the cornea. By an aspheric design with variations in the prescription, we can correct vision more accurately, helping to ease how hard your eyes need to work.

Toric contact lenses have a unique shape, like the slice of a donut. The shape of a toric lens creates different focusing powers on the vertical and horizontal orientations, correcting for astigmatism. If you have astigmatism, toric contact lenses may provide clearer vision than standard spherical contact lenses.

Scleral lenses have a wider diameter than other contact lenses, sitting on the sclera, or white part of the eye, and vaulting over the cornea. Scleral lenses are ideal for individuals with keratoconus or irregular corneas who find regular contact lenses uncomfortable.

Scleral lenses can also be a good option for people with dry eye, as the saline solution placed under the lens keeps your eyes moist and hydrated throughout the day.

Multifocal contact lenses include multiple prescription powers to correct vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. Multifocal contacts are typically prescribed for individuals with presbyopia, or age-related farsightedness. However, multifocal contact lenses can also be used in myopia management for children.

Myopia control contact lenses are soft, daily disposable lenses specially designed to slow myopia progression in children. We offer both Abiliti 1-Day contact lenses by Acuvue and MiSight 1 day lenses by CooperVision for children with myopia.

Ortho-k contact lenses are worn overnight, during sleep, to gently reshape the cornea and provide clear vision, lens-free throughout the day.

Ortho-k contact lenses can be used as a form of myopia management and are popular amongst individuals who play sports or live a very active lifestyle.

Caring for Your Contact Lenses

If you’re a regular contact lens wearer, you should attend annual eye exams to check on the health of your eyes. We can also assess whether your current style of contact lenses is providing the right vision, or if another style might be a better fit.

Regardless of the type of lens, contacts come with a higher risk of infection than glasses. That’s why it’s important to also wash and dry your hands thoroughly before inserting or removing contact lenses. Only use contact lens solution to clean your lenses and avoid showering, swimming, or going in a hot tub while wearing contact lenses.

We’ll discuss more tips to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable in contacts during your fitting. If you have any questions, please bring them to your appointment.
