Relieve Strained, Tired Eyes
While digital devices give us incredible abilities and freedoms, they can also affect our eyes. Spending long hours on a computer for work, school, or leisure could leave your eyes feeling dry, tired, or sore.
If you’re familiar with feeling discomfort after extended periods of time in front of a screen, you may be experiencing digital eye strain.
Our optometrists can assess your vision and determine if another factor is at play, such as an uncorrected vision problem, eye misalignment, or dry eye. Once we understand your symptoms and assess your eyes, we can determine which treatments can offer you relief.

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain
Digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, is associated with a number of common symptoms, including:
- Dry eyes
- Headaches
- Eye strain
- Blurry vision
- Neck and shoulder pain
Symptoms caused by digital eye strain typically occur during or after prolonged screen usage. Your symptoms may often alleviate when you take a break from digital devices, but will usually return once you’re using a device again.
Tips to Mitigate Digital Eye Strain
There are a variety of reasons why you may experience discomfort when using digital devices. During your assessment, your optometrist will check for signs of vision problems, including eye misalignment, uncorrected or undercorrected vision errors, and dry eye disease.
Depending on the cause of your symptoms, we may recommend specialty eyewear, an updated prescription, or dry eye treatments. Your full mitigation plan will be tailored to your specific needs; however, you can also implement some of these tips to reduce your discomfort.
Using proper ergonomics is key to your comfort, especially when spending prolonged periods at a computer. Work at a desk with a comfortable, supportive chair. Both should be at an appropriate height to allow your feet to rest flat on the floor and your arms in a comfortable 90° angle. Try to prevent rounding your shoulders or leaning forward while working.
Keep your keyboard and mouse close enough to prevent reaching and set screens at or just below eye level.
The lighting levels of both your screen and surroundings make a difference. Try to match the brightness of your screen to the ambient lighting level. Avoid working in a dark room with the screen as your only source of light.
Use an anti-glare screen if your computer reflects the light from the room. You may also find that glasses with an anti-glare coating help reduce symptoms.
When we’re focused on our screens, we tend to blink less frequently. This can cause dry eyes. Additionally, screens are constantly adjusting, with small flickers and movement that cause your eyes to consistently adjust their focus. This can cause eye strain and fatigue.
The 20-20-20 rule can help with both of these. Every 20 minutes at your screen, take 20 seconds to look at something 20 feet away. This gives your eyes a chance to refocus, reminds you to blink, and reduces strain.
Return to Work in Comfort
We want your vision to feel comfortable all day long, whether you’re working, studying, or gaming on your devices. A thorough assessment by our optometrists can help us determine the root cause of your symptoms and allow us to recommend a customized treatment plan to get your vision comfortable again.
Schedule an appointment with our team to assess your vision and discuss your digital eye strain. We can help you return to your work, studies, or hobbies with greater comfort and ease.
