Protect Your Eye Health with Comprehensive Exams

Routine, comprehensive eye exams are a vital piece of preventive healthcare.

An eye exam assesses more than your visual acuity (how clearly you can see at various distances). It also checks for eye conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, dry eye, and more, which can threaten your vision and eye health.

Beyond eye conditions, eye exams can reveal signs of systemic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, sometimes before you are aware or diagnosed with these conditions. This makes eye exams a powerful part of your overall healthcare plan.

If it’s been more than a year since your last eye exam, book your next appointment today.

When Do I Need an Eye Exam?

While everyone’s eyes are unique, we typically recommend that everyone receive a comprehensive eye exam each year.

Annual eye exams are the most reliable way to detect serious eye conditions that can threaten your vision. Many conditions emerge with little to no symptoms during early stages when they are most treatable, making eye exams your first line of defense against preventable vision loss.

Individuals who wear contact lenses, have a very high prescription, are diagnosed with an eye condition, or live with other systemic health issues, such as diabetes, may need more frequent exams. We’ll work with you to determine an exam schedule that fits your needs.

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

Your eye exam will consist of several parts. Once you check in with our friendly front desk staff, you’ll be brought in for pre-testing. This phase of the exam includes different imaging and diagnostic technologies that capture images of different parts of your eye.

We recommend retinal imaging on every patient, which requires an extra copay. This is because retinal imaging is a powerful diagnostic and screening tool that allows us to examine the health of your eyes and check for any signs of serious eye conditions, which can emerge without noticeable symptoms. By catching these signs early, through routine and proactive imaging, we can manage your condition and preserve your vision.

After you complete the pre-testing phase, you’ll meet with your optometrist in the exam lane. This part of the exam includes going through the results of your imaging and diagnostic tests, checking how well your eyes work together and react to light, and determining your current prescription. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask any questions or mention any concerns you may have to your eye doctor.

In some cases, we may recommend dilation to get a better view of the inside of your eye. Dilation involves administering special eye drops that temporarily widen your pupil, giving us a larger window into your eye. Dilation can make your vision blurry and your eyes more sensitive to light for a few hours. We’ll try to let you know in advance if you’ll need dilation. If your eyes are dilated, bring sunglasses and don’t plan to drive immediately after your appointment.

At the end of your evaluation, you’ll receive an updated prescription, if necessary, and will have the opportunity to meet with our optical team. They can guide you through our frame selection and help you find glasses that suit your style, prescription, and budget.

Common Conditions We Help Manage

During your comprehensive eye exam, we also screen for common vision and eye conditions that may affect your eyesight and comfort.

Beyond refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, we will also check for symptoms of dry eye, digital eye strain, and presbyopia, which may be causing you discomfort or distracting you throughout the day.

Our goal is to discover the root of your problem and help relieve your symptoms.

Dry eye is a common condition that causes gritty, scratchy, and uncomfortable eyes. It can be caused by an imbalance in the tear film or insufficient tear production.

During your eye exam, we’ll ask a couple of screening questions and check your tear film under a slit lamp microscope. If you have symptoms, we will complete a Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) Questionnaire to evaluate your need for dry eye treatment.

If we confirm that you could benefit from dry eye treatment, we’ll recommend coming back for an ocular surface evaluation.

Presbyopia is a common vision condition that occurs around the age of 40. The condition affects your close vision, sometimes referred to as age-related farsightedness.

If you notice that you need to pull your phone or book further away from your face to read, you may be experiencing presbyopia. Come in for an eye exam, and we can fit you with new glasses or contact lenses that can accommodate your new prescription, such as multifocals.

Digital eye strain can affect your daily comfort, especially if you spend long hours working on a computer.

We can evaluate your symptoms and vision to determine what mitigation strategies or tools might benefit you, such as optimized lenses for digital screens or adjusting your workspace.

Using glasses or contacts with an out-of-date prescription can also exacerbate digital eye strain, making routine eye exams a good prevention strategy to keep your eyes comfortable.
