What is Diabetic
Diabetic eye disease is a group of eye conditions, like glaucoma or cataracts, that are caused by having type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes. Another major condition under the diabetic eye disease umbrella is diabetic retinopathy, which has very serious consequences for your vision.
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when unregulated blood sugar causes damage to the blood vessels in the retina, by either blocking blood flow or causing blood to leak into the retina. Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy include blurry vision, dark spots, floaters, and even complete vision loss if not addressed.
Why Are Diabetic Eye Exams Helpful?
If you have diabetes, receiving dedicated eye exams is critical for staying ahead of diabetic eye diseases, which often don’t show signs until damage to your sight has already occurred. When you come in for a diabetic eye exam, our optometrists will examine your retina with specialized diagnostic technology and effectively monitor your eye health. After taking advanced measurements and images of your inner eye, your eye doctor can detect any changes in your retinal health and the presence of diabetic eye disease. From there, we will immediately develop a care plan to get your condition under control and preserve your vision.
